Music Trivia World's Morbid Facts Pages

Music Trivia World presents some not-so-cheery facts from the biz. Our first category is presented below...

Musicians Who Have Died From Heroin

It has been unwittingly glorified by popular culture. Lou Reed wrote a song about it. William Burroughs and Irvine Welsh wrote books about it. Whatever you wanna call it- smack, junk, skag, horse, or “h”, it almost seems that heroin is an occupational hazard for those who choose music as their vocation. Here is a partial list of those who have succumbed to this drug:

Robert Quine (December 30, 1942 – May 31, 2004)

Quine was an extremely talented and creative guitarist who lent his skills to artists such as Richard Hell, Lou Reed, John Zorn, Lloyd Cole and Matthew Sweet. Despondent over the death of his wife some 10 months earlier, he took his own life with a heroin overdose in May of 2004.

Kristen Pfaff (May 26, 1967 - June 16, 1994)

Pfaff was a member of Minneapolis band Janitor Joe before being recruited as the new bassist for Hole. She quickly became involved with everything about Seattle's scene, which happened to include drugs. After the death of Kurt Cobain, she decided to move back to Minneapolis, but was found dead of a heroin overdose in her Seattle apartment's bathtub the day she was to leave.

Dwayne Goettel (February 1, 1964 - August 23, 1995)

Goettel was a member of seminal industrial band Skinny Puppy. He had numerous side projects as well as his own independent label, Subconscious Records. According to a bandmate, he went back to live with his parents in Edmonton in an attempt to kick his heroin habit, but eventually was found dead in their bathroom from an overdose.
